Education Insights is a series of podcasts recorded by Adoption UK’s Education Policy Advisor, Becky Brooks and is available exclusively to Adoption UK Professional and Schools Members.

As a welcome to the podcast, the first episode is free for anyone to listen to. Just click on the link below.

The series will feature conversations with teachers, education experts, policy makers and parents, covering diverse experiences and views about how to ensure that children who have experienced trauma – including adopted children – have an equal chance to succeed at school.

Becky is a former teacher and foster carer, and an adoptive Mum. She has written a number of reports for Adoption UK, including Bridging the Gap – Giving adopted children an equal chance in school and Top of the Class – How Should we be Judging our Schools? She has also written a book called ‘The Attachment and Trauma Friendly Classroom’, to be published in September by Jessica Kingsley.

Education Insight 1- Jarlath O'Brien

Jarlath O'Brien has been a teacher for 18 years. He has worked in comprehensive, independent selective and special education. He currently teaches in a London multi-academy trust. He has been notoriously dismissive of OFSTED, saying that what he holds himself to account for is: 'What our students are going to be like when they're adults. That's our intense focus...doing everything we can to give them the best possible chance in adult life.' Jarlath has written 2 books about behaviour in schools - 'Don't Send Him In Tomorrow' and 'Better Behaviour: A Guide for Teachers.' In this first podcast in the Education Insights series, Becky White talks to Jarlath about his reflections from nearly 2 decades in education, and what his parallel career as a community police officer has taught him about relationships and behaviour.
