Adoption UK - 50th Anniversary

Adoption UK 50 Years logoAdoption UK is 50!

50 is a big milestone, and an opportunity to pause, reflect and plan for the futureFor 50 years we have supported, advocated, championed and been there for adoptive families around the UK.

Today our cause is as clear and compelling as ever; to secure the right support at the right time for the children at the heart of every adoptive and kinship care family.

For Adoption UK, this all began in 1971, when Elvis Presley and The Jackson 5 were in the charts, a gallon of petrol was 33p and two adopters starting running a voluntary organisation from their homes, for adopted children with special needsAdoption has changed a lot since then, and so have we.

Aurelio & Eddie pictureAurelio & Eddie adopted twin boys just before the first Covid lockdown.

Being Dad and Daddy was always something that we wanted for our future. Having connections within the adoption community through family and friends meant this route was perfect for us! We both work in education and see first-hand how life chances can change a child’s life for the better.

We looked around at different agencies and decided our local authority was the right way to go. Our assigned social worker was awesome! She was approachable, relaxed and caring but also told us how it was. When our approval panel day came we were beyond excited to be starting the next phase of the journey to find our children. Working alongside our social worker, we were approved to take two children. We always wanted siblings so it was perfect. We knew that this would also keep the siblings together.

We were lucky that we quickly saw a potential match of twin boys. I remember the phone call to Aurelio when we first saw the boys’ profile for the first time. We both said at the same time ‘these are the boys for us’. When you know you know. We have heritage to match the boys and Dad is also a twin. It just felt right. We never looked at another profile.

The match moved really quickly, even with a light delay due to Christmas. The boys arrived just in time for the COVID lockdown, which we were almost oblivious to as we were concentrating on the boys. For many, lockdown was really difficult, and we had many ups and downs. However we were both able to spend quality time with the boys and really bond and grow as a family. Especially in the garden and the paddling pool during the summer.

To be honest, it has been the best experience of our lives and we have the most beautiful, intelligent, loving and caring boys! So let’s put the arm bands back on and prepare to dive in to the best journey of our life.
