Workshop explores how harm caused by such substance misuse continues to impact on children’s development even when they are placed with adopters or carers.

Provides comparisons with other disorders as well as highlighting links with trauma and attachment difficulties. A key objective of the workshop is to enable participants to develop approaches to the care of children affected by parental substance misuse who are no longer living with their birth family. Such approaches may be useful at home, school and in the community.

Adoptive parents/carers pre or post placement
Professionals in this field who wish to provide support to adoptive parents/carers facing these issues.

This workshop will enable parents and carers to:

Understand implications for children and adoptive families where a birth mother misused alcohol and drugs during pregnancy.
Develop strategies for the care of children in the home, school and community.
Support for the unique challenges faced where drug misuse and attachment difficulties are both present.

This workshop will enable professionals to:

Understand the implications for children and adoptive families/carers where a birth mother misused alcohol and drugs during pregnancy.
Take away strategies to pass onto your adoptive parents/carers on how to care for these children in the home, school and community.
Network with adoptive parents/carers who have experience of living with children who face these issues on a daily basis.

Method of delivery

This workshop is participative and interactive, balancing theory with practical exercises. It provides parents and professionals with the opportunity to consider how they can put their learning into practice.
