The first 1000 days
Adoption UK Wales launched ‘First 1000 days project’ on the 1st October. The project offers a menu of support to adoptive families for the first 1000 days of the adoptive family journey.
The support is offered by people who have been there and done it themselves and the services are designed by adoptive parents. The support on offer is available throughout Wales and includes:
A listening ear: a Helpline staffed by adopters and open from 10am till 2.30pm 5 days a week.
Advice and Information: Fact sheets of issues specific to adoptive families about things such as: finding a school, finding a therapist, adoption pay and leave, attachment based or therapeutic parenting, contact with birth family and foster carers, siblings etc. Etc.
Learning opportunities: free places on training courses aimed at new adopters and covering a wide range of issues such as ‘getting a good night’s sleep for you and your child’
Getting together with other adoptive families: in support groups and family activity days.
A local ‘Adoption Buddy’ who can be contacted to find out what is going on in your part of Wales.
This support is available directly if and when the adopter needs it and is provided in Wales with the kind assistance of Henry Smith Charity and Community Foundation in Wales.
