Welcome appointment of Sir Martin Narey as Chair of the Adoption Leadership Board
Published: 15.04.14Adoption UK welcomes today’s announcement from the government that Sir Martin Narey has been appointed as the Chair of the Adoption Leadership Board.
The Board is a new initiative jointly developed by government, councils and independent adoption agencies to steer improvements in the adoption system and orchestrate a drive for more prospective adopters. The Board will play a vital role in advising Ministers and is made up of senior members from key adoption organisations including Adoption UK.
Sir Martin Narey's appointment was announced alongside news that over 96,000 people contacted First4Adoption – the dedicated information service for people interested in adopting a child in England – in its first year. Over 6,800 enquirers then went on to contact an adoption agency taking the next step in becoming an adoptive parent and addressing the shortfall of safe and caring homes for the 6,000 children waiting to be adopted.
Hugh Thornbery, Chief Executive at Adoption UK, said:
"We welcome the appointment of Sir Martin Narey as independent chair of the Adoption Leadership Board. His knowledge of the adoption system and the challenges we all face to find and support families for children waiting to be adopted will be of invaluable benefit. Good progress is being made with the reforms with more to come and it is very encouraging that nearly 100,000 people have contacted First4Adoption to find out more about adoption."
