We are delighted to announce that Sally Donovan is the new editor of Adoption Today magazine.
Meet the editor

Sally is an adoptive parent to two children and is the author of No Matter What and The Unofficial Guide to Adoptive Parenting as well as children's book Billy Bramble and the Great Big Cook Off. Sally also belongs to the Department for Education Expert Advisory Group on Adoption Support.

We asked Sally to introduce herself and talk about her plans for the magazine.

Sally, tell us a bit about yourself.

I am married and we have two teenaged children, both adopted. I’ve worked in industry and in horticulture. In more recent years I’ve written rather a lot about adoption.

You also work with the Department of Education don’t you?

In a voluntary capacity, yes. I’m a member of the Expert Advisory Group on Adoption Support. It sounds grand but it’s really about giving a parental and family input into achieving better support around adopted families in England. I look forward to the time when the same engagement is being sought in all parts of the UK.

What are your plans for Adoption Today?

I’ve got big boots to fill and hope to build on the work of past editors. The growth of social media presents an opportunity to engage more with members and to hear a diverse range of voices from across the UK. I’d like to freshen up the look of the magazine. I’m interested in fonts, which is not something I talk much about at dinner parties, but I’m hoping to put that interest to good use.

How would you like readers to get involved?

The August issue will set out a number of easy ways that anyone connected with adoption, whether that’s personally or professionally can contribute to the magazine. I would like to involve those at all stages of the adoption process, children and young people, social workers, volunteers and practitioners. I’ll also be looking for original images, so budding and experienced photographers and artists can get involved too.

 How can readers contact you?

You can tweet me @sallydwrites or email editor@adoptionuk.org.uk. I’ll also be around on the Adoption UK Facebook page. I will always do my best to respond promptly so if I don’t, give me a friendly nudge. If you are coming to the Annual Conference and would like to take part in a small focus group please contact me. I’d really value your feedback on Adoption Today.

Finally Sally, you can’t have much spare time, but what do you do to relax?

I like being outdoors. Gardening and walking provide an accessible escape and keep me regulated when life is throwing me off. I enjoy the occasional box set, I read and after a hard week there’s a chance I’ll be in our local pub on a Friday night, sipping a mineral water of course.
