Charity receives £18,000 boost to develop volunteer project
Published: 10.02.17Adoption UK is delighted to announce it has been awarded a grant of £18,000 to develop its network of volunteer support in Scotland.
The charity made a successful bid for funding from People’s Postcode Trust for a volunteer coordinator project to help train, support and recruit volunteers in Scotland to its peer support groups.
The aim of the project is to offer adopters sustainable family support by revitalising Adoption UK’s network of volunteers who can then offer peer support within their own local communities.
The 12-month project will be led by Adoption UK’s new volunteer coordinator, Simon Cawthorne, who took up his position at the beginning of February. Simon will work 12 hours a week and he will be based at Adoption UK’s Edinburgh office.
I’d encourage anyone thinking of becoming a volunteer to do it
Simon is an adoptive parent, a foster carer to young children and also has adult children. He previously worked as a play worker, facilitating after-school activities for children in under-privileged areas. He was also a volunteer with Adoption UK, running a dad’s group in Scotland for almost three years.
Simon said: “The main focus of my role is to create volunteering opportunities. Having previously worked as a volunteer, I know firsthand how rewarding this can be. You get to develop relationships as well as see groups and friendships grow, so I’m particularly excited about helping other people to come onboard.”
He added: “I’d encourage anyone thinking of becoming a volunteer to do it - you’ll get a lot of support and training, which you can use to help your own family, as well as free membership of Adoption UK.”
Fiona Aitken, Adoption UK's Director, Scotland, said: “We're delighted to have received this grant which has allowed us to employ Simon in his exciting new role. This project will enable us to have a wider reach and scope to support more families through volunteer led peer support groups.”
In an email, People’s Postcode Trust congratulated Adoption UK on its successful bid, adding: “Having received over 900 applications, competition for awards was very intense. However, the Trustees were impressed by your organisation and this particular project.”
