Adoption UK backs call to raise awareness of foetal alcohol syndrome
Published: 24.06.15Hugh Thornbery, CEO of Adoption UK, has responded to the motion by Sir Al Aynsley-Green to improve alcohol labelling and raise awareness of the devastating effects of foetal alcohol syndrome.
Hugh said: "As the largest national membership organisation for adoption, we hear first-hand accounts from adoptive parents and long-term foster carers caring for a child who has foetal alcohol syndrome. The effects can be devastating ranging from disability and/or health defects, including learning, behavioural and emotional difficulties, caused by being exposed to alcohol in utero.
There needs to be a greater awareness of foetal alcohol syndrome and its effects, so we can intervene and reduce the occurrence through better education and knowledge and secondly to ensure affected children and their families are provided with the appropriate support needed to help them."
