We are a mixed race couple, my partner is black and I'm white. We are still on stage 1. I read recently that mixed race children are given more to black couples is that correct? Or is it just if there isn't a mixed race family for the child?

many thanks

No I don't think that's the case. The SW will look at various factors and try to find the right match for the child its not just about colour or ethnicity.

Thanks for the reply Balsamic. we know its not just about colour it was just something I had read. Can I ask where you are in the adoption process its always lovely to hear about other peoples experiences.

They try to match the child's ethnicity, but pay attention to looks as well. Basically sw want families to look like biological ones, so they are not constantly confronted with funny looks and intruding questions and so that the child can feel that they truly belong. Saying that, we are transracial family with quite a spectrum of looks. However, we were an excellent match in other respects. So as in so many things, it all depends.

My daughter was placed 3 months ago. We are not exact match etnically but we do look very similar and she looks like she could be my BC

Nah, not true at all. My husband and I are a mixed couple (black/white) and we were inundated with profiles of dual heritage children (all under three) when we were family finding last year. The sws we met were very eager to place their children with adopters who, as close as possible, reflected their ethnicity. Dual heritage children are considered harder to place and there are never enough dual heritage adopters.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like you are all happy too. As I said I don't mind but I do agree it would better for the child to look like they were ours. Sometimes my husband and I are out with my charge (I'm a nanny) and we do get a few strange looks from people as my charge is blonde with brown eyes (not that she notices) iwe are so excited I wish everything could speed up but I know good things come to those who wait (even though it's been a long time). Thanks again it has helped me a lot :)

I wouldn't worry, I would think you will be in great demand! Im a single white mum with a dual heritage child who looks nothing like me! It's not a problem for us. We live in a diverse city so no one really bats an eyelid.

Me & my husband are both mixed and were approved in this year our experience has been that we were told due to past years that we'd be unindated and finding a LO wouldnt take long. we were told to prepare for a possible baby and incase things moved very quick however thats not been the case we have had 4 potential links all but one from adoption link which we actively searched for & so far 2 did not progress and other 2 are still ongoing - all children have been mixed white/balck and under 2. fingers crossed that we will have child's sw visit for 1 or 2 of them soon. My advise is dont rush the journey. The waiting post approval is brutal and we've not really been it it that long compared to others. People are correct there are not many mixed adopters however there is a shortage of children whatever their ethnicity currently.

Good luck x
