Melatonin at age 16

Report content

DD is currently under the care of CAMHS. However at the last appointment the psychiatrist informed EHCP that when she is 16 (Very shortly) she will be discharged back to our GP as she doesn't meet the criteria for adult services. However she is taking Melatonin which is prescibed and dispensed by CAMHS. However our GP won't prescribe Melatonin as it is a 'grey drug' but it's working really well for DD at present. Any ideas where I go from here?

Thank you

How can you be an adult at 16? I know that’s the case in Scotland but presumably if she has an ehcp then you’re in England?

Presumably you’ve had six months notice and a transition meeting? Ha!!

Ha ha indeed!! DD's Statement is currently being converted to a EHCP so we haven't seen the CAMHS plan in that. Funnily enough the psychiatrist suggested contacting Young Minds if we had any issues after discharge and I read then about the 6 month transition plan.

I think CAMHS stop at 16 and maybe the EHCP is mentioned as there was a report from CAMHS for an assessment for post 16

People buy it off the Internet. ....

Generally paediatric services stop at 16th birthday. Beyond that new referrals will be to adult services.

Any child in paeds health services *should* begin a transition pathway from 14 years.

Kazzie, its easily available in the US; its in the vitamin aisle. I keep some in my cupboard for managing jetlag. You could look at buying it online from the US

Here CAMHS continue to 18 - not that that's any help to you. Dd has only started really interacting properly with her psychiatrist since she turned 17!

Thank you everyone. DD doesn't meet the criteria for referral to Adult Mental Health Services according to the psychiatrist. Apparently the fact that we are receiving therapy through the ASF means that DD is okay (Ho ho). It was dropped on DH that she would be discharged in April at DD's last appointment so no transition planning or in fact any plan at all. If I could name and shame I would. It's taken them 2 years to complete an ASD assessment and we still have no answers. We did ask to be referred to a specialist team but were turned down as apparently everything is available locally (not seen any evidence in their speediness).

I'm a bit reluctant to order Melatonin online although I think that's the cautious nurse in me but can others reassure me that it is safe?

I’ve ordered online. Tbh it was more risky for my son and us when he was awake and unable to sleep than trying online bought melatonin!

As it happens a new psych has now prescribed it but happy to message you with a link if you’d like.

Thank you Donatella, that would be great. With the Melatonin I get a good night's sleep too as not having to worry about DD climbing out of windows in the early hours of the morning.
