Looking into Faostering

Report content

Hi

We are making enquiries into becoming foster carers. We have an adopted child and feel fostering would suit us all.

We currently receive DLA, Mobility, Carers and Adoption Allowance for our son. He doesn't have a physical disability but does have GDD so he is behind some areas. Does anyone know if Fostering payments will effect this income?

My husband works full time and I am home all day, our child has just been awarded 30 hours at Nursery and the school have said this is flexible for our fostering commitments.

Any advice would be gratefully received

Thanks x

Fostering allowances shouldn't affect any of the benefits /allowances you mention.

DLA is not means tested, and it would usually be ignored for the other two.

Thanks, we have our first meeting with Social Worker on Monday. Any advice or questions we should be asking?

training, support for you, for your foster children, peer support, allowance rates and any progression via training/experience, ability to choose age range and level of need. types of fostering they offer and can you choose between them (ie short term, emergency, planned, bridging, respite, long term).

bear in mind that meetings/lac reviews/contact etc will rarely take your own childs nursery/school hours into consideration so you may need a back up plan ready at short notice. have fun. my family love fostering and my AS managed this far better than he did my attempts to work outside the home.

They will want to know that you have thought through how your child with additional needs will handle fostering and how you plan to balance all the various needs of them all so be prepared for that one. Good luck !

Starting to write a list of questions and points we'd like to cover. Even though we've adopted before we are starting to feel a little nervous.

We have a big family that offer lots of support for AS so know he will love that, his favourite place is visiting grandparents Smile
