Initial Visit Waiting Time

Report content

Hi

My husband and I have recently got married September 2017 Smile although we have been living together for 5 years now. I'm 34 and ready to start the adoption process. We went to an information event a few weeks ago and we then phoned up to give details. We would be told that we would receive a call about when the social worker would come visit, how long do we wait for the phone call?

Bit of background. We had been trying to conceive for 3 years but I have PCOS, and a blocked fallopian tube. I had enough of doctors lying to me about my conditions and treatment options and after being on Clomid for 6 months I didn't want to put myself through IVF for a slight chance of being a success. It has been over a year since we started the fertility treatment and we have both come to terms with not being able to have our own children.

Looking forward to your responses.

I gave them a call about 4 weeks after as they didn't get my first application form and they called me back the same day.

Hello,

We completed the online form on Thur 26th October, got a call on Monday 30th and they visited us on Wed 15th November so happened quite quickly! They would have visited earlier but we couldn't get time off work until then. We are about to start stage one, got myself all worked up before the first visit and spent hours cleaning the house- social worker didn't move from her chair! I'd say if it's been 10 working days/ 2 weeks and you haven't heard give them a call, I didn't expect ours to be so quick as we applied during national adoption week so think they are prop busier than normal at the moment? Good luck with it!

I would give them a call if you haven't heard - no harm in enquiring and showing enthusiasm - and ask them what timescale you can expect to hear

Hi All

Thanks for your comments, no phone call received yet but they said we would be on the list from Tuesday so I guess they have other cases to deal with first before they can get to new adopters. Guess I am being a little impatient, will try to relax and wait for phone call Smile

Good luck with your application Helen!

From submitting our form we were contacted with in 5 working days, they suggested our initial meeting about the following week.

We had this initial meeting last Monday and got told we will hear back by this Friday.

I was the same, inpatient. But starting to realise this is how it's going to be for the next 9 months to a year of life if we proceed to stage 1.

Did you now have your call back?

Hi

It went well. My husband had a few behaviour problems when he was younger due to being diagnosed late for autism but he went to a behaviour boarding school and did well. He said he doesn't remember much but the report said that we can go forward and this will be explored further. The SW is coming round this Wednesday again just to clarify our debt (due to getting married we used our savings) as we both have loans and they want to be sure we can manage our finances once we get through to matching. I am eligible for adoption leave from my employer.

That sounds really positive - good luck.

The next stage is about exploring any potential difficulties in detail, but nothing from the initial chat stops you from progressing, which is the best you can hope for at this stage.

Hi lulla belle

We had a 2nd visit from the SW about our debt. We had used our credit cards for various bits for the wedding. We do plan to pay them off in the next 8 months. They might put us on hold for a few months whilst we prove they are coming down. Or put us through to registering now and provide proof over the next 6 months during assessments that our debt is coming down. Just waiting on the SW to get back in touch to let us know what the decision will be.

Have you had your visit? We were told on our visit that the report would be typed up and sent to us within 2 weeks. SW had a few events on so she couldn't do it sooner. Unfortunately I heard the other day they are putting us on hold for 12 months due to our debt situation. We are going to see our bank and see if they can help with anything. If not going to look into debt management plan.

I heard back from them today they, we have to wait another week due to the lack of SW in Cornwall and two being off for the xmas holidays, but they said it would be by Thursday at the latest.

Im really sorry to hear that, I really hope the bank can help you out.

Im feeling a bit nervous now we both have a loan, which we mentioned but they didn't make us elaborate on it, I didn't realise it would be a issue

I think it depends on what debt it is, we recently got married and we used our credit cards probably a bit too much, we both have loans as well but they were not too concerned about them, it was more the credit card debt. Even though we have £500 spare a month I think they wanted more. When I looked at the figures on paper I sort of saw her point but I was still shocked to find out they wanted to put us on hold for 12 months. I am going to get sorted though and approach them again in 6 months.

Hope you hear soon! Perhaps email them in the new year, enjoy Christmas while you can and then start pestering......2nd Jan too soon?

I think between us we owe about 4k I pay £80 a month and the husband about £120 so Hopefully that will be okay. The email said next Thursday.. Im actually really nervous to read the report, its weird reading what other people think of you.

12 months does seem excessive, Defiantly get onto them sooner. x

You should be fine with that, looking at mine on paper is shocking and a lot more than 4k. Problem is the bank - always want a high credit score rating which is something I have tried for years to work on. We have asked the SW to come round in the new year to get an idea of what the spare funds needs to be and if we can approach again in 6 months.

Ita actually Impossible to get a higher rating. I worked on mine for years then as soon as we starting to do mortgage proceedings it took it down to poor!

Ive just given up on it now! I pay off my debts and dont Bother looking at it

Hi,

Am reading with interest as we have our initial visit booked in for January. Just wondered if you could consolidate the debt to make it more manageable monthly payments? I was card hopping for 0% deals so had three credit cards and an over drafts. I managed to find a low interest loan that means I have a much lower monthly repayment than I had paying off the minimum payments and will take around the same amount of time to pay off. Just a thought. Could you perhaps join a credit union? They often offer low interest loans and budgeting accounts?

Oh and we’re also putting the difference we save on our monthly payments into a savings account. It’s not a lot but hopefully it’ll grow a bit. I’ve also signed up for some market research companies where you get cash for doing surveys. Anything I make from that goes straight into the savings account. We haven’t been the best with money over the years so hoping that this will evidence that we’re taking it seriously and doing what we can to save and get rid of debt while having enough disposable income to support a child. It’s a juggling act!
