Health Report cost from GP

Report content

Hi I wondered if anyone can help I have just contacted my GP to ask about doing a health report for my adoption application and they want to charge me £180 per person. This seems extremely high to me to fill out a forms and send it off. I know doctors are busy but I'm nhs not private.

Anyone have any advice.

THANKS

This is classed as private work, so you have to pay. It does seem to vary from practice to practice, although I think the current recommended fee is around £80. You could ask them to reconsider but they are not obliged to.

Thankyou. Yes it seems around £70-80. But £180 is extreme

Hi Cornflakes30 - We paid £80 each and saw our GP out of hours. £180 does seem rather steep. Luckily our GP had done these reports before and the whole thing was pretty relaxed and he understood the time sensitivity so saw us really quickly

It should also be a physical exam too. Our LA paid for ours (10 years ago) £76 each. We had to go on a Saturday morning and my DH and I were in there about an hour and twenty minutes. Full strip to underwear examination and go through of medical history.

Our GP was an family adopter herself.

Hi, we paid something like £70 or £80 each about 3 years ago. Two years later, when we were asked to renew our medicals, the same practice asked us to pay £150 each!!! That was the same GP practice & only 2 years following the initial medicals. It was supposed to be exactly the same procedure. I tried to challenge it but they wouldn't change the price....

My wife and I recently had checks done as part of Stage one. Our local GP said it would be about £75-80 each, depending roughly how long it took. 10 days later we got a bill for £135 each.

Safe to say we have "disagreed" about payment thus far......

Hi All.

I would check with your SW but your medical doesn't have to be done by your own GP. Our SW has only specified that I do because of previous treatment I've received.

We haven't been asked to have our medicals yet but we asked our Dr about costs and they said they have never invoiced any PA but always VA or LA.

Thanks for all your helpful comments. It seems this Is a bit of a grey area. I looked online and the gov says £73.86 should be the rate but that GP’s can charge what they life. Seems a Bit unfair when we are adopting should be a concession surely. I will update this post when I get a decision or learn anymore good for future adoptees to know things in advance.

I found that as it is classed as 'private' work they can charge, and we also struggled to get an appointment to suit as it had to be out of their NHS clinic time.

Luckily our LA paid for ours, they gave us an envelope to give to the GP with all the info in to claim the money, but on other forums I've read that a lot do charge.

We didn't have to strip down, they just went through our medical records and asked questions about anything that flagged up, and checked BMI, reflexes, flexibility etc!

Mine was similar to instageone, and also paid for by LA. Maybe worth asking LA if they will help, if they are processing you, especially as it's much higher than standard charge. Also, can't help wondering if it's worth asking a private doctor , if there are any around near you, met be cheaper than nhs for this !!!

LA must have paid for ours - I know we didn't - but it was 10+ years ago.

LA paid for ours three years ago it was £75 each. I know of some cases where the LA have contacted the GP on adopters behalf and had more luck getting a sensible price. When the LA paid for it the G P would be told the price they were willing to pay and that would be it.

We paid for our reports earlier this year. Our two doctors, both at the same surgery, discussed the costs together and agreed on £80 for the 2 of us. They were really encouraging about adoption and happy to see us even though we were new patients, having only just moved to town.

Myself and my husband had our medical today and it was £120 each. We were told the surgery can charge anything up to £200. I understand the reasons behind the charge but it is rather steep.

We finally got our medical after a long process of them not releasing it until we paid. It was a bit of a nightmare. We got charged £80 each but we had to fight for that.

We had ours done in 2011, it cost us £120 for two us, so £60 each.
