Funding for transport to school

Report content

Hi all

Our first child is in receipt of this and gets a cab to and from school each day via her ehcp.We are thinking of also moving our son to this school as our daughter is so happy at this school.aaWe have spoken with the cab driver about the possibility of our son travelling with his sister to school but due to insurance he can't agree to this and has suggested we contact our lea.

Has anyone any thoughts on this? i don't want to rock the boat re funding but this would be a perfect scenario.

Thanks all for any help/info much appreciated as always.

Regards Westi

Transport is provided by the local authority so you would have to go through them. Sometimes they will allow it but at your cost! We were looking at this when our daughter moved up to y7. She was statemented and being turned down for the unit our son was in. We would have had to go to panel to apply for a place on the bus that picked our son up - but would have had to pay. As it turned out, she got the place we wanted so that issue was resolved. Does your son have any additional needs? Is the school in catchment? Is there a place available?

One other thing ... is your son happy where he is? If he is, then think carefully about moving him. Sometimes the sensible option is to educate separately. My younger two spent all their primary school years in separate schools. It wouldn’t have worked to have them together.

Hi. If there is a spare seat in the taxi then the LA could approve it BUT they will charge you the cost of the journey and it win be extremely expensive. My daughter went to a sen school by taxi. They drove past the home of another girl who hadn't qualified for transport - her parents had had to go to tribunal for the school and she got the school but not the transport. The LA said she could go in the taxi - at £60 per day!! She only lived 15 mins from the school by car btw.....
