Fostering and adoption

Report content

Hi guys I have three foster children. I’ve have come to the end of my Fostering carer and don’t feel like I can continue. Although I no longer want to foster there is no way I would give up on the children I have. We are a close family unit. We want to find out if applying for a sgo or adoption would be the best for our family. I currently foster the three children as my full time job and obviously any change would effect us as a family and financially. We want to work our financially how we would stand so I can work out if we would need to work more hours etc and then work out types of jobs etc. I don’t feel confident talking to my LA at the moment and wondered if there is any organizations out there who could help with financial advice, benefits and the legal process etc?

Thank you. My partner owns a small business too which we are both partners in but I’m not hands on so the online checkers are complicated to work out. I’ve never claimed anything for kids or working tax etc so totally confused. The child are a sibling group and then a seperate child. None have disabilities and quite straight forward. We are in England. Thanks so much for your help x

Tread carefully. We once enquired about adopting a child who was in long term foster care. The LA said LTFC was the plan for him and they would not be changing that. When his foster carers gave up fostering he had to move to another foster carers as he was still in the care of the local authority.

See if SGO (Special Guardianship Orders) are applicable.

The process we went through was very similar to Adoption ... referees, checks, lots of forms.

If the rights of the children are considered, then stability and security should be the main focus. A lot depends on their ages and how long they have been with you. It might be worth checking out Family Rights Group (www.frg.org uk) for advice.
