Cancer and Ad5

Report content

I had a sarcoma cancer removed from my thigh one year ago. Will I be able to adopt or will this go agaeasy? Any success stories from people with cancer. I am 50 and my husband is 50 and we have one child aged 11 and our oldest died on 2015

We feel after everything we have been through that we would be especially conscious of the needs of a child who needs to be adopted. ..over 5 years old

There is a couple in our PA support group, she had breast cancer 10 years ago, they adopted their son six years ago when he was five. Age wise they were both in their mid 40s when AS was placed.

Best thing to be aware of is that there are very few set rules. Adoption agencies can behave totally differently from each other. Many of them reject applications for spurious reasons and the reality may be just that they have a surplus of applications. It will certainly be in your favour that you are hoping for a 5+ year old and it’s worth shopping around for agencies (including voluntary agencies) who are actively recruiting for this age bracket.

On the medical side there are very different recurrence rates for different types of cancer. And different recurrence patterns, for example breast cancer is more likely to return within the first two years whereas in other cancers the risk declines differently over time.

You'll probably find that agencies treat you as an individual, and all the information provided by yourself and your GP would normally be weighed up by the adoption agency's medical advisor who needs to confirm that you are fit to adopt. If you know there are going to be specific concerns then you may be asked to get your medical done early on in your application process.

In addition to passing the medical you may find that the way you deal with the question of cancer comes up during discussions in your homestudy. There are several threads in the archive from prospective adopters doing homestudy after cancer (examples below). There is a rudimentary search facility for the archive using the search button on the forum toolbar.

Good luck with your application.
