Education membership

Education membership is ideal for anyone working in a professional capacity in an education setting with children and young people who are classed as ‘Looked After’ or ‘Previously Looked After’

The membership has been developed to help professionals develop knowledge, skills and networks of support to enable you to achieve the very best provision of care and learning for vulnerable pupils.

Why join Adoption UK

Most adopted children have suffered neglect, abuse or violence in early childhood. Fewer than half reach expected levels at KS2 and fewer than one in four secure five good GCSEs (including English and Maths). They  are more likely to have social, emotional and mental health difficulties and are 20 times more likely to be permanently excluded. And early trauma doesn't just affect adopted children; children in foster care or kinship care, children who have experienced domestic violence, and bereaved children can also struggle in school.

But an understanding, compassionate school can make the world of difference to these children's resilience, their relationships and their life chances - it can give them an equal chance. Understanding why children who have experienced loss, trauma, abuse or neglect may behave in a certain way, what triggers this behaviour and how best to support them, can have a positive effect on everyone's experience in the classroom.

Adoption UK has in-house education expertise and a wide network of teachers, policy makers and parents.

We provide highly tailored training materials to contribute to your continuing professional development and to help you equip others in your school. We offer advice, support and up to date information about relevant education policy and practice. We are also campaigning for policy changes that will help schools support their most vulnerable pupils.

As an education member you get access to all of this:

  • Invitations to exclusive online webinars and ‘professional connect’ networking events
  • Free inset training resources and case studies
  • 30% discount on tailored online training for professionals, by leading provider AC Education
  • Termly education newsletter summarising relevant policy and practice developments
  • Termly exclusive recorded interviews with education experts
  • Your own copy of Let’s Learn Together, a guide to supporting adopted children in school
  • Free subscription to our highly praised bi-monthly magazine, Adoption Today
  • Exclusive member discounts with Jessica Kingsley Publishers
  • Discounts on tickets to Adoption UK conferences and events
  • Opportunities to get involved in influencing government policy
  • And when school’s out.....Adoption UK Advantage is an exclusive members’ club with lifestyle discounts for you and your family, including days out, shopping and travel.

There are two different tiers of membership, depending on the type of Education setting you are in.

For small settings with only one designated professional responsible for previously looked after children and looked after children we recommend the ‘Individual Professional’ membership.

Individual Professional membership is also suitable for self-employed professionals and other people working in the Education sector, such as Psychologists, therapists and more.

For large establishments we suggest the ‘Whole Setting Education Membership’ – which gives access to all the benefits for up to three members of staff.

The myth of ‘catching up’ after Covid-19

When I was in secondary school, my parents requested permission to remove me from school during term time for a week to go on a holiday of a lifetime. The school reluctantly agreed, on the condition that I would work hard to ‘catch up’ the work that I missed.
