The Adoption UK Annual Conference moves north this year, to the fantastic Majestic Hotel in Harrogate, and the theme of our flagship annual event will be  Stronger Families, Brighter Futures.

With multiple workshops, an exhibition marketplace and our first ever young people's zone, we're confident that this year's event will be bigger and better than ever!

Therapeutic Parenting - Joanne Alper, director of services at Adoptionplus

Joanne has extensive experience of working with adoptive families, foster carers and vulnerable birth parents. A qualified social worker, she was instrumental in the setting up of Adoptionplus as a voluntary adoption agency. The agency provides a therapeutic adoption placement service for children who have experienced significant abuse.

Supporting Vulnerable Children With Their Mental Health - Dr Dave Williams, adviser to Welsh Government on children’s mental health

Dr Dave Williams has worked extensively with the National Adoption Service and National Fostering Framework groups in Wales. He is also Chair of Children in Wales which includes Voices from Care and was an external adviser to the NSPCC report Listen Act Thrive. 

Overcoming Adversity - Simon London, TV presenter and producer and adult adoptee

Simon was placed for adoption at the age of eight with his sister, after years in children’s homes. His sister was returned to care. As a black child adopted by a white family in the 70s, the next phase of Simon’s life was eventful in different ways. His adoptive family sent him to boarding school, where he put the survival skills learned in care to good use. He started his career as a journalist and was the Daily Mirror's TV critic before moving to television as a presenter and then a producer of mainstream comedy and entertainment shows including Graham Norton and Dick & Dom, culminating in the role of BBC Creative Head of Comedy.

Young adoptees panel 

Our truly inspirational Young Adoptees Panel will return this year, once again hosted by award-winning columnist, author and adoptive parent, Sally DonovanDon't miss the chance to listen to these amazing adoptees share their experiences.  


We will be running several workshops during the day, covering both essential and specialist subjects. Gather tips, tricks and resources on the issues that matter most to you and link up with other adopters undergoing similar experiences.

Young people's zone

Our first ever young people's zone takes the form of a one-day theatre workshop for up to 20 children/young people. The workshop is being run by Harrogate Youth Theatre's education team whose staff members have extensive experience of working with care experienced young people. Ticket prices are £20.50 per child. This covers the workshop, all refreshments and catering for the day and all fees. Participants must be aged 4-16 and parents are encouraged to let us know if their child has specific support needs.
