Adoption UK is now offering individual workshop places to practitioners, based on the highly successful parent support programme ‘It’s a Piece of Cake?’
Initially training by Adoption UK was set up to meet the needs of adoptive and foster families. Following requests to provide training for practitioners, training has been adapted to meet this growing need. The workshops below are suitable for social workers, health visitors, therapists, teachers and others who work with adoptive or foster families.
Parental Substance Misuse: one-day workshop providing information on the physical and behavioural effects on children born to parents misusing drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and the possible long term implications. It gives knowledge and information to develop strategies for such children in the home, school and community.
School and Education Issues: one-day workshop covering issues that may arise in the classroom for a child due to the effects of separation, loss, trauma and attachment. Strategies and practical suggestions for supporting the child in school are explored.
Insight and Strategies: two-day workshop aiming to give practitioners a deeper understanding of life in an adoptive or foster family. They will learn strategies to help support parents and carers living with hurt children, and develop their understanding
What the participants of Insight and Strategies say...
"This course has given me the insight into developing more positive strategies and advising carers."
"I feel I am better able to do my job in supporting adopters."
"We can go away with practical ideas about working with adopters and other carers. This is rare in a course. The exercises helped to focus on certain issues and these will be retained and not be put in a drawer and forgotten."
