Adoptive parents, foster parents and all professionals who work with babies, children and young people are invited to a major Adoption UK conference in Bristol next month on developmental trauma.
Speaker Kate Cairns will address what developmental trauma is and how children are affected, as well as the kinds of interventions for children and support for families that can help.
Trauma in early life may explain why many children and young people have difficulties managing their emotions, forming relationships and making the most of opportunities.
Trauma can take many forms and it seems the earlier it occurs, the more profound its effects.
Because a child’s ‘normal development is affected the terms Developmental Trauma has become popular. Its effects have been recognised in children who have suffered early abuse and neglect, though for some children there may be no record of such traumas.
Children in care or adoptive families may bear the scars of their early experience and show this in their behaviour and relationships.
